The brown bean

India runs on Chai.
But South India, South Indian families and South Indian family mornings cannot run without this magic bean. So, what is in this brown bean, the tiny odd-looking seed that fuels our day?

'I'm so tired, let's have some coffee?'
'That's machine coffee. I want filter kaapi'
I've said this, you'd have said this or heard a friend of you rattle this atleast a zillion times so far. This morning too, I wondered if our brain's ignition system has any link with that one small cup of coffee in the morning. Why can't we start our day with some awfully-nutritious awful-tasting basil, chamomile, pomegranate flavoured green tea with a dash of ginger and lemon? After all, it's packed with antioxidants and everything good?
What would've happened if the Kaldi's goats never ate this berry? To think about this, I need another coffee shot.

It's amazing how a tiny red berry seed is carefully picked, milled, pounded and then packed off to places across continents to run lives. Brazil has a admirable 35% market share in the worldwide coffee production, but do Brazilians drink as much coffee as Americans or British or TamBrahms? Ummmm, not really. We don't drink coffee because it lowers risks of dementia or Alzheimer's disease. Yes yes, caffeine does all that and also keeps us pepped up for the day, but we drink it because our parents have done so, our friends do so and our kids will do so too! And for the simple fact, we like to drink it, innit?

As long as there's coffee, how bad could things get?
Keep calm and drink coffee.
